QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. An advanced degree, Masters or higher, from an accredited institution with emphasis in educational leadership, school administration, curriculum or other related field.
  2. Valid state certificate to practice as a school principal, or completion of a school administrator’s continuing education requirement.
  3. Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
  4. Successful teaching and administrative experience preferred.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and community.
  6. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership that results in collaborative working relationships and student achievement gains.
  7. Working knowledge of teacher evaluation and teacher mentoring/coaching.
  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Superintendent of Schools

 

SUPERVISES:

All staff assigned to the elementary school. 

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide the necessary leadership and supervision to promote the educational development of each student.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1.   Manages all building personnel.
  2. Assigns teachers to classrooms and students to classes.  
  3. Evaluates performance of teachers, program and staff.  Provides in-service training as needed.
  4. Administers an on-going program of curriculum and staff development that strives to maintain an effective learning climate in the school.
  5. Provides leadership for designing and implementing professional staff development programs to support building and district goals.
  6. Maintains positive relationships with parents, parent groups, school volunteers, outside agencies, and the community at large.
  7. Communicates the philosophy, goals and objectives of the elementary school program to the Board, stakeholders and to the community at large.
  8. Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline according to due process standards.
  9. Administers the full range of extra-curricular activities at the school.
  10. Coordinates and administers the preparation and implementation of the building budget, submitting appropriate recommendations to the Superintendent and Director of Finance.
  11. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings and conferences, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing concerns and issues of mutual interest with others in the field.
  12. Interprets, implements and assures compliance with the policies and procedures set forth by Federal regulations, Michigan Revised School Code and the Petoskey Board of Education, including administrative rules and regulations.  
  13. Provides leadership for continued development of an effective school curriculum, innovative instruction and assessment based on best practices.
  14. Demonstrates leadership capacity to meet and exceed the standards in the state accreditation program, school improvement framework and federal adequate yearly progress.
  15. Monitors adherence to the approved curriculum and appropriate instructional practices.
  16. Works collaboratively with the school leadership teams to meet and exceed building and district goals.
  17. Coordinates with Human Resources regarding recruiting, interviewing, screening and recommending the best-qualified candidates for building staff positions.
  18. Provides guidance in resolving conflict with staff, administrators, students and parents.
  19. Creates and maintains a safe environment for all students and staff.
  20. Works cooperatively with other administrators in the areas of pupil accounting, facility use, staff assignments, financial resource development and coordination of schedules.
  21. Attends and participates in regularly scheduled Board of Education meetings, as well as in appropriate committee meetings to support the work of the school, district and community.  Prepares such reports as the Superintendent of Schools may direct.
  22. Performs other related duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  

Fifty-two (52) weeks with vacation days, holidays, personal business days and personal illness days as indicated in the employment contract.  Salary to be set by the Board of Education.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent of Schools in accordance with the policy of the Board of Education regarding evaluation of professional staff.
